ADVENTURES IN NATURE PRE-K INSTRUCTORS

The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County seeks Pre-school instructors who will design and implement a week long class on science or natural history. Class structure is set up as a “mommy and me” situation where the child’s parent or guardian is present and involved for the full two hour class. Curriculum should include activities that require the grown up’s assistance and interaction with his or her child. Lesson plans should be developmentally and cognitively appropriate for children in, or just entering, pre-school (3-4yrs.). Classes should be designed to be very hands-on and interactive, utilizing the museum’s many resources (exhibit halls, Discovery Center, etc…).This temporary position works 40 hours/week Monday through Friday for one week intervals; July 7-August 8, 2008.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Must be able to work M-F, between 8:00AM and 3:30PM for a one week interval during Summer AIN.
  • Must be able to climb stairs, walk two to three miles over uneven terrain and lift 20 to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to work outdoors as needed.
  • Excellent people skills and rapport with children.
  • Ability to plan games and activities for pre school children.
  • Refined organizational skills, must be able to prioritize and multi-task.
  • Responsible and able to work without direct supervision.
  • Must have reliable transportation in order to be punctual and dependable in care of children.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs other work-related duties as assigned

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Bachelors Degree or higher with a specialty in early childhood education 

ADVENTURES IN NATURE COUNSELORS

The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County seeks 10 (ten) Adventures in Nature Counselors to work with our Adventures in Nature summer camp at the Natural History Museum and the Page Museum at the La Brea Tar Pits. The Adventures in Nature Counselor develops, implements and supervises recreational activities during early morning and late afternoon “Extended Adventures” as well as lunch periods during Adventures in Nature, the Museum’s seven week long summer day camp that runs between early-July and late-August. Counselors will assist with classroom activities, in a teacher's aide capacity, and with administrative and other programmatic duties as needed.  Teams of Counselors will also design weekly schedules of craft and recreation activities for Extended Adventures participants.  This temporary position works 40 hours/week Monday through Friday from July to August.

  • Refined organizational skills, must be able to prioritize and multi-task.

  • Must have reliable transportation in order to be punctual and dependable in care of children.

  • Performs other work-related duties as assigned

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • High school students may apply.  Prefer high school graduate, especially undergraduate/graduate college students majoring in education, child development, life or social sciences, or museum studies.
